About us

Our hospital offers patient-centered care for people with psychiatric, neurological, muscular and developmental diseases. National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry is one of the five National Medical Research Centers in Japan. We are also conducting many research projects on these diseases.

Our mission is "to provide high-quality medical services for patients, while respecting their human rights." We help patients and their families to understand their diseases, and to deal with their disabilities, so that they can maintain their quality of life, and lead fruitful life.

Our hospital consists of:

  1. Outpatient clinics, clinical laboratory, rehabilitation unit
  2. Inpatient wards with 486 beds (psychiatry, neurology, child neurology, and neurosurgery, internal medicine, surgery, and orthopedics)

Departments


  • Psychiatry

    Department of Psychiatry provides evidence-based high levels of clinical diagnoses and treatment plans for patients with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders (depression or bipolar disorder etc.), dementia, sleep disorders, dependence, epilepsy.

  • Neurology

    Department of Neurology provides advanced and specialized medical care focused on neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia disorders such as Parkinson’s diseases, spinal cerebellar degeneration, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as immune demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy and myositis.

  • Child Neurology

    Department of Child Neurology provides medical care for all children suspected of having brain, nerve, muscle diseases, or developmental disorders. Out of about 900 new outpatients, about 300 are the patients with epilepsy, around 100 are with muscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy, myopathy, and myositis, and about 250 have developmental disorders or sleep disorders, which together account for more than half of the total, allowing us to provide treatment based on the latest and extensive experience.

  • Neurosurgery

    Department of Neurosurgery specializes in functional neurosurgery, exemplified by surgical treatment for epilepsy and deep brain stimulation (DBS), and also handles shunt surgeries for normal-pressure hydrocephalus and general neurosurgery cases such as meningiomas. In particular, epilepsy surgery is performed across all age groups, from infants to adults, boasting one of the highest numbers of surgeries in Japan.

  • Internal Medicine

    In Internal Medicine outpatient department, we provide diagnosis and treatment from a comprehensive internal medicine perspective for those suspected of having internal medical conditions or those who are concerned about such conditions themselves, as well as for patients who are seeing other departments within our hospital and have developed internal medical issues. If necessary, we will refer patients to specialists.

1. Consultation Guide
  1. About interpreter
    We kindly ask that patients with nationalities other than Japan be accompanied by your own medical interpreters when you receive our medical service.
  2. Medical Information Referral Letter (Letter of introduction)
    Referral Letter from your primary care physician is required when visiting us for a consultation.
    If a referral letter from other medical institution cannot be prepared, you would be additionally charged ¥7,700 (tax included) for a “SENTEI RYOYOHI”, an additional fee for a first-time patient without a referral, at the time of the first visit separately from normal fee for consultation.
  3. Please bring following items;
    ① Photo ID (Residence card)
    ② Japanese health insurance card
    ③ Referral Letter
    ④ Medicine Notebook
    ⑤ Mother and child health handbook (for Child Neurology only)
2. How to make an appointment

The consultations here in this hospital require making previous appointments for first and return visits. Please make appointments in accordance with the following procedures.

International Patients without Japanese Health Insurance

We ask that patients make appointments and receive medical service through intermediary agents (including interpreters) that serves as guarantors in order to facilitate smooth consultations and treatments, taking into account differences in language and medical practices.

Whether for a first visit, return visit, hospitalization, or outpatient, the consultations will be conducted through guaranteeing agents.
In principle, please contact the intermediary agencies under contracted with our hospital.
